“The Journey of Nostalgia” art exhibition documents Syrian heritage

With the aim of documenting Syrian heritage, “the House of Arabic Calligraphy and Arts” Association has recently held an art exhibition entitled “ the Journey of Nostalgia” at the cultural center in Abu Rummanheh in Damascus .  

The 24 artists displayed  35 artworks  and sculptures which  varied with their themes between portraiture,  silent nature and ornamentation using various techniques, styles and sizes.   

Plastic artist Reem Qubtan,  Head  of the association’s board of directors, who participated in two portraits, said in a statement to SANA, “ the exhibition aims at  recalling the Syrian  ancient heritage of professions and handicrafts to introduce them to  the young generation , exchanging experiences among participating artists as well as linking  between past and present”.    

Plastic artist, Wanasah  Abed, pointed out that the members of the association sought , through the exhibition, to focus on traditional crafts in the Levant, indicating that her  two acrylic and oil portraits  depicted  the Arabian horse because it embodies an ancient heritage aspect in our memory.   

The sculptor Rasha Obeid participated in  a medium-sized sculpture of a woman , stressing that her choice of a female came as a symbol of Syria, its heritage, its civilization and its richness with ancient legends.  

The potter Zoya Karmouqa participated in a work entitled (Ishtar of Syria), which expresses containment and fertility, and includes 14 symbols, each of which indicates the province of Syria, stressing that our civilization is full of details that we are constantly connected to.  

In turn, plastic artist, Muhammad Wissam Tahan, clarified that his participation came with a literal painting , which symbolized Damascene heritage values through verses by poet Nizar Qabbani in a contemporary style to express the heritage with his own artistic vision.

Adnan Qassem presented two portraits in a realistic and oily technique about the pottery profession  to shed light on this deep-rooted profession and revive it.   

Artist Abeer Al-Awdat, who presented three paintings  said, “I sought to highlight Al-Ajami’s profession, which  Damascus is famous for  through its ancient history. In my third painting I wrote the names of this city through the ages using Kufic script”.      The artist  Rana Taha stressed that the exhibition is an important cultural event to honor our ancestors creative traditional handicarfts  in addition to highlight the Syrian heritage.  

Her participation  came with two artworks , one of which displayed  the tomb of Salah  Eddin  and the second about Bimaristan al-Nuri as an important heritage place.
