The meeting of the Constitutional Discussion Committee will probably take place this summer, says Lavrentiev

Nur-Sultan, (ST) – Russian President’s Special Envoy to Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev announced that, the next meeting of the committee to discuss the Syrian constitution may be held in the summer of this year 2021.

“Most likely, the meeting of the committee to discuss the constitution will be held this summer,” Lavrentiev said in a statement following consultations at the sixteenth meeting of the Astana format on Syria in the Kazakh capital, Nur-Sultan. He added that, “we have called on the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to Syria, Geir Pedersen, to work in this direction, as all delegations, including the Russian delegation and the Iranian delegation, expressed their support and interest in continuing this work.”

Lavrentiev pointed out that, the West has not yet provided a justification for expanding the cross-border aid mechanism into Syria, adding that, “we do not see clear evidence in favor of expanding this cross-border mechanism.”

According to the Russian envoy, this issue was discussed during the meeting of the Russian delegation with Pedersen in the Kazakh capital.

Pedersen expressed his hope that “the work of the committee to discuss the constitution will resume in the near future and hold meetings periodically.”

“I hope that in the near future we will be able to agree that we will make it possible to meet again and continue discussions within the framework of the sixth session of the Constitutional Committee,” Pedersen told reporters in Nur-Sultan.”

Pedersen said that, he had “good discussions” on the subject in Nur-Sultan and said, “I felt strong support for my work.”

The delegation of the Syrian Arab Republic, headed by Dr. Ayman Susan, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, held a meeting earlier today with the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Syria, Geir Pedersen within the framework of the sixteenth meeting of the Astana format on Syria, which began in the Kazakh capital.
