Khamenei: Election day is the day of the Iranian people

Tehran (ST): Iranian Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli announced today the start of presidential elections in Iran and the opening of polling stations for Iranians to choose a new president from among four candidates.

Polling stations in Iran opened their doors for voters to participate in the thirteenth presidential elections, in addition to the elections for the sixth session of municipal and village councils and the supplementary elections for the Assembly of Experts, at seven in the morning local time until twelve o’clock in the evening with the possibility of extending until two o’clock in the morning tomorrow, Saturday if necessary.

Iranians began flocking to polling stations shortly after they opened to cast their votes in the presidential elections. The competition in the presidential elections is taking place among the four candidates, Ibrahim Raisi, Mohsen Rezaei, Abdel Nasser Hemti and Amir Hossein Qazizadeh Hashemi, after the withdrawal of Ali Reza Zakani, Saeed Jalili and Mohsen Mehr Alizadeh. 

About 66,800 polling stations were allocated for the presidential elections and 75,15 polling stations were allocated for the municipal and village council elections.

Meanwhile, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, stressed the necessity for the Iranian people’s broad participation in the presidential elections.

While casting his vote today, Khamenei stressed that the broad participation of the Iranian people in the polls is in the interest of the country and in determining its future, and said that “election day is the day of the Iranian people.”
