Syria: Claims of US ambassador to UN of being “concerned” about humanitarian situation of Syrians is open political hypocrisy

Syria reiterated its refusal to extend the mechanism for bringing aid into it, stressing that this mechanism represents a violation of international law and the sanctity of Syrian borders and territories, and political and humanitarian blackmail.

In a press statement by Syria’s permanent delegation to the United Nations on Wednesday, the delegation denounced the hostile statements made by the US Permanent Representative to the United Nations during the past days. The delegation considered  these statements as an open propaganda campaign led by the US and its allies from Western countries to extend the effects of the decision of the cross-border humanitarian aid mechanism. While Western countries claim to be keen to meet the needs of the Syrians through this mechanism, they threaten to cut off their funding for the United Nations humanitarian activities in Syria if this mechanism is not extended, the statement added.

The statement stressed that these claims aim to divert attention from the violation of this mechanism of the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic. These statements also aim at unveiling the  serious flaws of the mechanism’s work, starting from the lack of transparency in the monitoring and verification mechanism, passing through the lack of identification of the partners involved in the process of delivering aid in addition to the reach of  the largest number of aids to the  terrorist organizations. The US ambassador disregards the fact that this mechanism was a temporary measure imposed by exceptional circumstances that no longer exist.

“The claim of the American ambassador of being “concerned” about the humanitarian situation of the Syrian people and the claim that her country provides grants and humanitarian aid to them represents open political hypocrisy that is inconsistent with the unilateral coercive inhumane measures imposed by US administration on the Syrian people,” the statement added.

“The US ambassador should have announced an end to the US occupation of part of the Syrian territory and a halt to their  theft of oil, agricultural crops and cultural property of the Syrian people, instead of spewing out  allegations  of how to deal with the crisis,” the statement pointed out, adding: “The American ambassador’s praise of the role played by Turkey expresses a consensus by the two NATO members in sponsoring the terrorist organizations located in Idlib and its vicinity, and finding pretexts to cover the presence of Turkish occupation forces on Syrian territory and to obstruct the delivery of aid from inside Syria.

Syria’s permanent delegation to the United Nations concluded its statement by emphasizing Syria’s commitment to cooperate with national and international partners to improve the humanitarian situation of Syrians throughout the Syrian Arab Republic, stressing that the center of humanitarian action is the capital, Damascus, and not anywhere else.
