Syria elected to the Executive Council of the World Health Organization

Geneva (ST): The World Health Assembly, at its 74th session, unanimously elected  Syria to the Executive Board of the World Health Organization, representing the Eastern Mediterranean Region, for a period of three years.

The Executive Council of the Organization is the executive body whose competencies include ensuring the implementation of the decisions and policies of the World Health Assembly, providing advice and recommending draft resolutions to the Assembly for approval, in addition to providing the WHO secretariat with instructions and directions.

The Council’s terms of reference include consideration of the nominations of the Director-General, the appointment of regional directors in agreement with the regional commissions and the study of the program budget of the World Health Organization.

Supervising the election of the Director-General and approving the Organization’s reform plans are the most important issues on the council’s agenda during Syria’s membership.

The Executive Council is one of the three bodies that make up the World Health Organization, along with the General Secretariat and the World Health Assembly, and consists of 34 members with technical qualifications in the field of health. Each member is named by one of the member states elected for this purpose by the World Health Assembly.
