Ballot boxes closed, vote counting starts in the presidential elections in a number of Syrian embassies
Capitals (ST): The ballot boxes were closed in the Syrian embassies in Algeria, Egypt, Sudan, South Africa, Spain, Belgium, Austria, Serbia, Switzerland, Cuba, and the Czech Republic according to the local time of these countries and the counting of the votes in the presidential elections began.
The Syrian ambassador to Cuba, Dr. Idris Mayya stated that the ballot boxes for the presidential elections were closed according to local time, referring to the effective participation of the Syrian community and students in Cuba in the voting process.
In turn, Amira Karawani, Chargé d’Affairs at the Embassy of Syria in the Czech Republic confirmed in a statement to news correspondent in Prague that the elections were conducted in a transparent and smooth manner, during which the Syrian citizens expressed their belonging to their homeland, thus affirming the independence of Syria’s national decision.
It is noteworthy that the vote counting processes for the Syrian presidential elections in Australia, Japan, Indonesia, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Iraq, Oman, the UAE, Iran, Armenia, Cyprus, India, Pakistan, France, Lebanon, Jordan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Russia, Belarus, Bulgaria and Romania began earlier after closing the ballot boxes in the Syrian embassies and consulates according to the local time of these countries.
The Supreme Judicial Committee for Elections, and due to the massive turnout to participate in some Syrian embassies abroad, and the Foreign and Expatriates Ministry request to allow citizens wishing to cast their votes in the presidential elections, decided to extend the election period in the Syrian embassies until twelve o’clock at night according to the local time of each embassy.
