The Higher Constitutional Committee announced today its final decision on the list of presidential candidates that included Abdallah Salloum Abdallah, Bashar Hafez Al-Assad and Mahmoud Ahmad Merei.
The C.V of the candidates is as follows:
Mr. Abdallah Salloum Abdallah
He was born in 1956 in Aleppo.
He holds a BA in Law. He worked for the Student office of the Socialist Unionist Party in Aleppo.
He was a member of the central committee of the Socialist Unionist Party in 1993.
He occupied the following positions:
-Secretary of the Socialist Unionist Party’s Damascus Countryside Branch in 2001.
-Member of the Politburo of the Socialist Unionist Party in 2002.
-Member of the Executive Bureau of the National Union of Syrian Students 1985-2005.
-He represented Syria in several Arab and international conferences.
-Member of Parliament 2003-2007.
-Member of parliament 2012-2016.
-Minister of State for Parliament Affairs 2016-2020.
-He is married with 2 daughters and 3 sons.
Dr. Bashar Hafez Al-Assad
He was born in 1956. He got his secondary school from Damascus in 1982. He joined the Arab Socialist Baath Party in 1979.
He got a BSC in Medicine in 1988.He enlisted in the Syrian army since he was at the third year at the University. He specialized in ophthalmology and trained at Tishreen Military Hospital from 1992-1994. He continued his studies in the UK.
After his return from Britain he followed several military training courses and headed the Syrian Computer Society 1996-2000.
He occupied the position of President from 2000-2007. He was reelected as president in 2007 and in 2014.
He is married with two sons and a daughter.
Mr. Mahmoud Ahmad Mer’ei
He was born in 1957 in Talfita in Damascus Countryside.
He holds a BA in Law from Damascus University since 1993.
He is a registered lawyer in the Lawyers Syndicate since 1993.
He is one of the founders of the Arab Organization for Human Rights in Syria and head of its board of directors since 2010.
He is a founder of the National Coordination Commission and member of its Executive Bureau and was head of its Youth Bureau for two years. He was retired from the commission in 2012.
He works as a member of the political Bureau of the Democratic Arab Socialist Party in Syria and founded the “Syrians for Democracy Movement in 2012.
He is Deputy Head of the Syrian Federation since 2012 until now and Secretary General of the Democratic National Action Commission in Syria since 2014.
He took part in Moscow1 and Moscow2 conferences on dialogue between the Syrian government and opposition.
He is member of the internal opposition delegation to Geneva meetings and attended several rounds of the intra-Syrian political dialogue in Geneva.
He is Secretary General of the Opposition’s “Syrian Democratic Front” since 2018 which consists of 6 political forces representing the internal opposition.
He is married and has five children.
