Damascus, (ST) – Time limit for accepting Presidential elections nominations ended on Wednesday with number of candidates reaching 51 , including 7 women
During the last day of receiving nominations for presidency, the People’s Assembly received 10 new applications from the Supreme constitutional court, raising the total number of submitted applications up to 51 oneincluding 7 women.
On April 18th, the Speaker of the People’s Assembly, Hammouda Al-Sabbagh announced the commencement of applications for Presidential elections as of Monday April 19th till April 28th, 2021.
The General Elections Law stipulates that an application to run for the office of President of the Republic is not accepted unless the applicant has written support for his nomination from at least 35 members of the People’s Assembly, and none of these members may support more than one candidate.
The process of supporting the members of the People’s Assembly for their candidates in the presidential elections began on the twentieth of this month and is taking place in a special hall within the building of the Council in the presence of the Speaker of the People’s Assembly.
After the deadline for the written confirmations process expires, the box is sealed and sent to the Supreme Constitutional Court, which supervises the electoral process, studies the legality of candidacy applications, and decides about them.
