Moscow (ST): The Russian Pacific Fleet announced today that it has detected an American spy plane over neutral waters near the Russian border, and that a Russian fighter plane escorted it until it went far from Russia’s airspace.
The TASS news agency quoted the fleet’s press service as saying in a statement that the Russian Aerospace Control System discovered an air target over neutral waters in the Pacific Ocean that was approaching the borders of Russia, noting that a Russian MiG-31 fighter approached it in order to determine its identity and prevent any illegal entry to Russian airspace.
The source added: The target was identified as an American RC-135 strategic reconnaissance aircraft, and as it moved away from the Russian border, the MiG-31 fighter returned to its base.
