“Support the Orthodox Poor” Association in Homs is an initiatives to support needy families

The  “Support the Orthodox Poor” Association  in Homs is implementing a set of humanitarian, relief, social and health initiatives with the aim of supporting and empowering needy families and strengthening cooperation between various segments of society.

According to chairman of the board of directors of the association, Suhail Zaitoun, the association currently includes 72 families from the most needy families who receive monthly financial aid and food hampers from what is available at the association or from donations. He noted that Al- Ghassani clinic is affiliated to the Association and offers nominal fee medical services and medicines for about 1,200 patients every month.

Dr. Jean-Claude Sandichali, the supervisor of the association’s Ghassani clinic, stated that it is supervised by about 15 doctors and that various health and medical services are provided to all segments of society.

Zaitoun pointed out  that the Association has implemented a number of projects to rebuild Old Homs, including the reconstruction  and repair of 22 damaged homes and offering assistance to the students who left their education to be able to return to their school. It also established a clinic for women and children in the village of Fairouza, in cooperation with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). More than 10 thousand patients benefited from its free health services.

He also referred to the association’s endeavor to develop the “Beit al-Mouna” project, which was launched in 2015. It contributes to providing job opportunities for women and girls. The Elderly House project (Ghassani House) in Khirbet Al-Tin Noor district is also affiliated to the association and extends over an area of 10 thousand square meters and accommodates 140 elderly people.

It is noteworthy that the association was founded by Archbishop Athanasius Atallah in 1886.

It signed several cooperation agreements with associations working in the relief and humanitarian field.
