Salem Akkawi shows painting without title

The National Center for Visual Arts in Damascus hosts an exhibition for artist Salem Akkawi.

The displayed  paintings  were “without a title” so that the visitor’s impression about it will be the title.

The exhibition included “42” abstract paintings that focus on letters and mixing of colors  using acrylic colors.

Artist Ghaiath Al-Akhras, Director of the National Center for Visual Arts, said to Syria Times that “the effect of Al- Jazeera area in Syria is very clear in the paintings”.

“The artist used the yellow color to refer to wheat and  the red color to show the folklore of that areas,” Al-Akhras added,  pointing out that the artist does not draw what he sees, but draws his impressions.

Artist Salem Akkawi  said to Syria times : “My paintings are inspired from Arabic calligraphy. I draw something similar to Arabic calligraphy but in abstract way . I feel that the Arabic letter has not changed over the years, so calligraphers still write one form of the letter which still has its aesthetics.”

Akawi indicated that he was affected by the nature and the beauty of Al jazeera (North east of Syria) region.

He seeks to express his inner feelings , happiness , beauty and ambitions  He draws the content  and leave the interpretation to the those who see his works. He believes the contemporary art does not directly shows subjects but rather leaves it those who see the works.
