Beijing renews its support for Syria’s efforts to protect its sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity
China has reaffirmed its support for the Syrian government’s efforts to protect Syria’s national sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, stressing its rejection of all the policies and actions that endanger Syria’s national security.
China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Zhang Jun said during a Security Council session last night that “the internationally blacklisted terrorist groups in Syria can create a state of chaos at any moment and threaten security and stability in the country and the entire region, thus the international community must be cautious and must strengthen cooperation and firmly fight terrorism in accordance with the international law and the Security Council resolutions.”
Zhang added “many facts revealed that as far as the issue of counterterrorism is concerned, politicization and double standard policies don’t work and they may even cause endless damage,” pointing out that working to achieve a political solution to the crisis in Syria is the target that the Syrians hope for the most, since it serves the interest of the countries of the region and the entire world.
The senior Chinese diplomat called for commitment in the right direction in order to achieve a political solution to the crisis in Syria, improving the humanitarian situation, ending the occupation and fighting terrorism, reiterating his country’s support for the Syrian people to help them determine the future of their country independently and within a political process led by the Syrians themselves.
Zhang went on to say “we must take full advantage of the Syrian government’s role in improving the humanitarian situation on the ground. In the light of the Coronavirus pandemic and the food security issues in Syria, urgent relief aid must be provided to the country to meet the basic needs of citizens, particularly women, children and the most vulnerable categories.”
He hailed the Syrian government’s constant cooperation with the United Nations, the NGOs and other partners in enhancing humanitarian operations and delivering medical supplies.
The Chinese diplomat reiterated the need to lift the unilateral coercive economic measures imposed on Syria to help it recover and rebuild itself, calling on the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs to make a comprehensive assessment of the impacts of the coercive measures on the Syrians and submit it to the Security Council.
