The UN: Turkey’s withdrawal from the Convention for the Protection of Women is evidence of the decline of human rights in it

Geneva (ST): The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, has expressed her regret  over Turkey’s announcement of its withdrawal from the Council of Europe agreement to combat violence against women, which is evidence of the deteriorating human rights situation in Turkey.

The French news agency quoted Bachelet as saying in a statement : “The High Commissioner expressed her regret at this decision, which represents a major retreat in Turkey’s efforts to guarantee women’s rights, especially because inequality based on gender and violence against women is considered one of the serious problems in the Turkish society”.

The statement added that the withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention demonstrates the lack of real democratic participation in decision-making and causes great concern regarding the human rights situation in the country, especially the diminishing civil space, noting that this decision was taken without a parliamentary debate or broad consultation with members of civil society.

Although the Turkish regime does not keep official statistics on the killing of women, the data of the “Crimes Against Women” website showed that 1964 women have been killed in Turkey since 2010, and the World Health Organization revealed that 38 percent of Turkish women are exposed to violence from their partner in the midst of government disregard for these crimes and impunity for their perpetrators.
