Moscow: Syria has been subjected to unprecedented aggression by international terrorism

Moscow (ST): The spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, stressed today that Syria has been subjected to unprecedented aggression by international terrorism for ten years.

In a briefing on the passage of ten years of the war on Syria, Zakharova said, “Moscow has taken an uncompromising stance on international terrorism in all its forms  and is providing military assistance to eliminate it in Syria .Moscow is firmly and resolutely defending a political settlement to the crisis there.”

Zakharova reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to the political process led by the Syrians themselves in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254 and without any external interference, and effort  to strengthen the work of the Constitution Committee in Geneva, calling for its discussions to be regular and constructive.

Zakharova stressed her country’s principled position based on the need to preserve the  sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of Syria and continue to fight terrorism in it, recalling the atrocities of terrorists against civilians and the provocations of the “pseudo-humanitarian workers” from the terrorist organization (White Helmets) using chemical weapons with the support of their Western sponsors.

She pointed out that the accusations against the Syrian government of committing war crimes, which the Americans and their allies have used to justify their attacks on the Syrian territories, are “a violation of international law and exceeding the powers of the UN Security Council.”

On the return of Syrian refugees to their country, Zakharova considered that this is an important step and requires the active participation of the entire international community.

Zakharova explained that the “hostile states” of Syria, after failing to achieve their goals through the military war, have moved to practice a “policy of economic strangulation,” imposing unilateral coercive measures and creating obstacles before the return of refugees.

She indicated that imposing “political conditions” in exchange for providing humanitarian assistance to the Syrians is inhumane and unconstructive, especially in light of the outbreak of the Corona pandemic, pointing out that the Syrian people are being punished for not wanting to live according to the patterns imposed on them from outside, and this is another evidence of the double standards practiced by Washington and the West towards Syria.
