Supporting investment in renewable energy in Syria an urgent need for production sectors: experts

Expanding investment in renewable energies in Syria is an urgent need to secure alternatives for fossil energy sources which are currently needed by different sectors of production and which are witnessing a decline as a result of the systematic destruction of energy resources by terrorists in addition to the unjust economic blockade imposed on the Syrian people. 

The Syrian University of Tarous has made significant strides in this regard. It has carried out research works relating to benefitting from all kinds of renewable energies based on studying the economic feasibility of any project, according to Dr. Maysaa Shash, Dean of the Faculty of Technical Engineering at the University.

Shash told SANA that there is an urgent need to fund alternative energy projects at the university, disseminate the culture of using this kind of energy and link between scientific studies and social situation on the ground, noting the role that can be played by the private sector and concerned ministries in this respect.

Shash attributed the lack of investment in renewable energies to the difficult conditions that resulted from the terrorist war on Syria, since this kind of investment needs courageous steps by the joint sector.

  She noted the possibility of benefitting from the water areas in the Syrian coastal region and from the environment in central Syria where experts can benefit from the semi-desert lands in carrying out major renewable energy investment projects.

On his part, Dr. Mohammad Abbas Dayoub, Deputy Rector of Tartous University for Scientific Affairs and Scientific Research, called for making new laws and legislations to enhance investment in renewable energy, such as exempting foreign imports from taxes and increasing the return on invested capital.

He stressed the availability of necessary resources to start investment in this filed, including the national capital, the industrial zones, and the national cadres which are capable of implementing such projects.
