Guterres meets Sabbagh, stresses strong commitment to cooperating with the Syrian government

The United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has affirmed the UN’s strong commitment to working for the benefit of the Syrian people and to cooperating with the Syrian government.

Guterres made the remarks during a ceremony held for receiving the credentials of Syria’s new Permanent Representative to the United Nations Bassam Sabbagh. 

Guterres asked Sabbagh to convey his greetings to President Bashar Al-Assad and expressed deep feelings of respect for the Syrian people, praising their history, culture and hospitality that he felt during his previous tenure as the UN Commissioner for Refugees.   

On his part, Sabbagh extended President Al-Assad’s greetings to the UN Chief, stressing Syria’s complete support for his efforts in implementing and protecting the principles and goals of the UN Charter.
