Zarif: The ICJ ruling is a legal victory for Iran

On February 3rd, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif confirmed that his country had achieved a ‘legal victory’ following the announcement by the International Court of Justice that it was authorized to reconsider the economic sanctions that former US President Donald Trump imposed on Tehran.

“The court rejected all the initial objections of the United States to the case brought by Iran against the backdrop of illegal US sanctions,” Zarif tweeted.

“ Iran achieved through this another legal victory after the October 3, 2018 order,”  referring to an order it issued.

On October 3rd, 2018,the court on that day requested that Washington lift the sanctions that target goods with humanitarian purposes.

Zarif said that Iran has always fully respected international law and that the time has come for the United States to respect its international obligations.

On February 3rd, the International Court of Justice announced its intention to decide Iran’s request to cancel the US sanctions, which were re-imposed by the Trump administration.

On the other hand, during his meeting in Tehran, Zarif renewed with his Iraqi counterpart, Fuad Hussein, the call to end the presence of American forces in the region, noting that this was the best response to the assassination of Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis.

Zarif expressed his hope that the planners and perpetrators of this terrorist operation would receive punishment for their criminal act through judicial prosecutions.

Zarif discussed with Hussein the development of bilateral relations and the latest regional and international developments.
