Industrial cities in Syria have witnessed notable growth in 2020 despite sanctions

Industrial cities in Syria have achieved considerable growth despite the difficult circumstances in the country and the unfair unilateral coercive economic measures imposed on the Syrian people.

Some 120 industrial facilities joined production in Adra Industrial city in Damascus countryside, Sheikh Najjar industrial city in Aleppo and Hisyah industrial city in Homs in 2020, creating 13488 new job opportunities.

Director of Services and Industrial Cities at the Ministry of Local Administration and Environment, Eng. Mayada Ahmed, told SANA that work and investment never stopped in the three cities despite the challenges that emerged as a result of the war on Syria.

She pointed out that 789 investors were given new sections in the three industrial cities for the production food, engineering and building materials.

 According to Eng. Mayada Ahmad, the rate of investment in Adra industrial city has reached 49%, while it is 79% in Sheikh Najjar and 65% in Hisyah.

She went on to say that work is underway to implement some vital projects in the three cities, clarifying that in Adra industrial city, a section has been specified for building a private hospital, some apartments in the housing area have started to be allocated and the electronic infrastructure for the e-government has almost been completed.

In Sheikh Najjar industrial city, Eng. Ahmad said, a fairground and an artisans’ zone have been established and the industrial sections in the city have been provided necessary equipment and facilitations to start production.

Ahmad clarified that the number of industrial facilities under construction in Adra is 33, while it is 14 in Hisyah and 80 in Sheikh Majjar.  The facilities which have started production number 24 in Adra, 21 in Hisyah and 75 in Sheikh Najjar, according to Ahmad.

She revealed that four new industrial and artisans’ zones were inaugurated in 2020 in Homs and Damascus Countryside, pointing out that work is underway to provide all forms of financial and technical support to help the administrative units implement these projects.

It is to be noted that more than 11 industrial zones have been established over the past years in Damascus countryside, Tartous, Lattakia, Homs and Sweida.
