Russia renews severe criticism of Pompeo’s visit to Israeli settlements in occupied Golan

Moscow (ST):  Russia today renewed its severe criticism of the visit paid by the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to the Israeli settlements in the occupied Syrian Golan, stressing that it constituted evidence to Washington’s disregard of international law. Sputnik news agency quoted the spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakarova as saying that Pompeo’s visit is further evidence that testifies to Washington’s disrespect of the International legal principles for settling the situation in the Middle East, noting that the US attempts to legalize the Israeli illegal settlements in this way run contrary to the UN Charter and the UN Security Council Resolutions.

Zakharova reiterated Russia’s principled stand regarding the illegitimacy of constructing the Israeli settlements in the areas occupied in 1967.

Earlier, Russia’s permanent representative to the UN  described the visit as a provocative act calling for preserving Syria’s unity and respecting Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
