Syria’s sovereignty should be respected and foreign troops illegally deployed on Syrian land should withdraw: Iran

NEW YORK, (ST)- Syria’s sovereignty should be respected and the foreign troops illegally deployed on the Syrian land should withdraw, Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Majid Takht Ravanchi said during a Security Council session on Wednesday on the situation in Syria.

He pointed out that some countries seek to prolong the crisis in the country and impose their will on the Syrian people by imposing unilateral coercive measures against Syria, impeding international efforts to help the Syrian refugees return home and creating obstacles in the face of political settlement in the country.

“The United States, which is occupying parts of Syria under the pretext of combating terrorism, is actually supporting terrorist organizations such as Jabhat al-Nusra and plundering the Syrian people’s oil and other resources,” the Iranian diplomat clarified.

He went on to say that the unilateral coercive economic measures imposed on the Syrian people have worsened their suffering, particularly amid the Coronavirus pandemic crisis. He stressed that these measures are illegal and inhuman and they are doomed to failure.

He welcomed the efforts that have been exerted to find a political solution to the crisis in Syria, noting the need to support Syria’s reconstruction efforts in order to facilitate the return of the Syrian refugees and the displaced to their original areas.

Ravanchi, who condemned the continued Israeli attacks on Syrian territories, reiterated that the occupied Syrian Golan is a Syrian land and that the visit of the US State Secretary Mike Pompeo to the Golan is a provocative behavior.
