Syria participates in UNESCO-organized virtual meeting on education assessment and school reopening

With the participation of Syria, the 9th electronic meeting organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was held on assessing education and reopening schools via the Internet.

The meeting aims at showcasing the experiences of Member States that have planned and evaluated education through various strategies that included assessing classrooms and exams.

The meeting focused on the different learning methods that students followed during the suspension period in schools, which led to a disparity in the levels of knowledge and skills they had, with a large loss of knowledge among some of them.

During the meeting, the countries that assessed the level of pupils ’learning when schools reopen, the countries that plan to do so, as well as the countries that plan to do the assessment in order to monitor educational losses to support learning recovery and learn how teachers, schools and governments plan to use the assessment results, were identified.

In his intervention, Minister of Education, Dr. Darem Tabbaa, focused on evaluating education and reopening schools in Syria, stressing the importance of preserving the right of every child to education, protecting him from diseases, applying the health protocol to encounter Coronavirus and taking the necessary measures to sterilize schools before their opening. The Ministry worked on increasing the number of classrooms to achieve spatial distancing between students and opened schools while taking into consideration the compensation for educational losses.

Tabbaa noted that the ministry worked to take the necessary measures to secure remote learning opportunities to help students compensate for educational losses. It also launched educational platforms through which it provided the necessary programs to ensure networking with parents and facilitate access to  necessary knowledge in the period that coincided with the spread of the Coronavirus.

Secretary of the Syrian National Committee for UNESCO, Dr. Nidal Hasan, and the Director of the Center for Educational Measurement and Evaluation, Dr. Ramadan Darwish attended the meeting .
