Khaji: Western countries politicize humanitarian issues in Syria to achieve their political goals

On November 21, Iranian Foreign Minister’s senior assistant for private political affairs Ali Asghar Khaji said that Western countries are politicizing humanitarian issues in Syria to achieve their political goals.

During his meeting with the United Nations Special Envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen in Tehran, Khaji criticized the lack of participation of some countries, especially the West, in the international conference on the return of Syrian refugees, which was held recently in Damascus.

Khaji said that the Western countries that claim to defend humanitarian issues have made containing the humanitarian situation in Syria conditional.

Khaji referred to the importance of continuing efforts to find a political solution to the crisis in Syria and to continue the meetings of the Constitution Discussion Committee.

In turn, Pederson explained to the Iranian side the latest arrangements made with the members of the Constitution Discussion Committee regarding the agenda and timing of the committee’s next meetings.

Pedersen is visiting Tehran after a visit to Russia on November 20, during which he met with the Special Representative of the Russian President for Middle East and African Affairs Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov.

Pedersen and Bogdanove discussed the need to continue progressing efforts to solve the crisis in Syria on the basis of UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
