An initiative to support war-affected children in Homs countryside

Homs, (ST)- With the aim of providing psychological and social support to children and adolescents, the Homs Culture Directorate and the Karim Association, in cooperation with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), are implementing an initiative to support the war-affected children in Homs countryside.

About 50 volunteers set out to a number of villages in the northern and eastern countryside of Homs to carry out a series of activities that contribute to mitigating the negative effects of the war on children in that area.

Seba Wassouf, one of the organizers, said that volunteers work with children, adolescents, families and communities to generate a sense of security, provide opportunities to express themselves, and develop constructive ways to deal with the negative effects of war, in addition to running activities, playing, exploring and spending time with friends and peers.

Ghadeer Al-Hayek, one of the participants in the initiative, explained that these activities are not only to entertain children but are a necessary part of the growth processes that have social, physical, educational and emotional consequences.

He stressed that children have responded to the interactive games that were presented to them, such as creating puzzles, making letters and numbers with putty, dancing with each other which is a positive step and a creative experience that encourages more giving and achieving
