Algeria’s Ambassador to Syria reiterates his country’s support for dialogue-based political settlement in Syria

DAMASCUS, (ST)- Algeria’s Ambassador to Syria Hassan Al-Tuhami has stressed his country’s clear and firm support for finding a political solution to the crisis in Syria through national dialogue among the Syrians that serves their interests and maintains Syria’s sovereignty, stability and territorial integrity.

In a statement to SANA marking the 66th Anniversary of the Algerian Revolution or Algeria’s Independence Anniversary, al-Tuhami said that Algeria has always stressed the need to respect international legitimacy resolutions including the UN resolutions that reject the Israeli occupation of the Syrian Golan.

He affirmed that the relations between his country and Syria have always been distinguished due to the popular cohesion that is backed by the two large communities in both countries. This is due to the deep-rooted history that has been enhanced by the heroic, intellectual and humanitarian deeds of Emir Abdelkader al-Jazairi during his stay in the Levant and due to the support of the Syrian people and leadership for the liberation revolution in Algeria.

He asserted the two countries’ keenness on boosting Algerian-Syrian ties and reactivating consolations as well as mutual official visits to create partnership opportunities in all fields.

The Algerian ambassador went on to say that cooperation between Algeria and Syria passed through several important historical stations, noting that the joint committee for cooperation between the two countries held several meetings that resulted in cooperation agreements in the economic and cultural fields.

He added that the two sides also agreed on strengthening  and expanding  cooperation between the two countries in the domains of trade, finance, banking, customs, industry, investment, energy, transportation, higher education and scientific research.

Al-Tuhami reiterated that his country adheres to the general principles of its foreign policy based on respecting the independence and sovereignty of states, on non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries and on resolving crises, disputes and problems through peaceful means, dialogue and reconciliation far away from military solutions and foreign agendas.

On his country’s role at the Arab, regional and international levels, al-Tuhami said that Algeria has taken many initiatives in order to find negotiated political solutions to many crises in the region and it continues to support the Palestinian cause and exert intensive efforts to find a political solution to the crisis in Libya.

Al-Tuhami stressed that the Algerian Revolution of Independence in November 1954 will remain a source of inspiration and strength to all the Algerians and a historical memory of glory drawn up by the convoys of martyrs who made this revolution an example to follow by many peoples in Africa, Asia and Latin America in their liberation process. He also affirmed that the revolution has enabled Algeria to play a key role in perpetuating the values of freedom, justice, equality of rights among peoples and in supporting peoples’ right to self-determination.
