Azerbaijan denies Armenia’ accusation of using phosphorus munitions in Nagorno-Karabakh

BAKU/ YEREVAN, (ST)- Azerbaijan’s authorities have denied Armenia’s reports on the use of white phosphorus munitions in Nagorno-Karabakh province.

The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry described these accusations as unfounded, according to Itar Tass news agency.

“We officially declare that the Azerbaijani army has no weapons and ammunition prohibited by international law,” the Defense Ministry’s press service said on Saturday.

Earlier, the Armenian Human Rights Commissioner Arman Tatoyan accused the Azerbaijani Armed Forces of “using phosphorous weapons against the surrounding and the civilian population in the Karabakh region.”

In the same context, huge explosions occurred Saturday morning in the city of Shoshi near Stepanakert, the capital of Karabakh, as a result of airstrikes that caused no human casualties, according to local sources in the city.

The new developments came After Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed yesterday to take urgent steps regarding the armed conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, including not to deliberately target civilians and to proceed with the exchange of prisoners and bodies of the dead.
