“Let’s walk together and Defy Cancer” a marathon launched to raise awareness about early detection of breast cancer

Damascus (ST): “Let’s walk together and Defy Cancer” is the name of a marathon launched this morning with the participation of civil and youth groups to increase awareness about the early detection of breast cancer. The marathon started from al-Jalaa Sports Club in Damascus towards the al-Akram Mosque on Mazzeh highway, from which the participants headed to its last stop in the Umayyad Square.

Muhammed al-Shawi, the official in charge of administrative affairs in the company said that the event was organized by the Syrian Company for Crafts ( one of the programs of the Syrian Trust for Development ) in cooperation with the Governorate of Damascus.

He added that the marathon comes as part of the National Plan for Cancer Control and the activities of the Pink Month that occur in October every year, and the proceeds of the marathon will be devoted to support those affected by the fires that recently erupted in a number of governorates.

Breast cancer is one of the most common and dangerous types of cancer among women. Last year, 2,063 new cases were diagnosed in women and 103 cases in men in Syria.

The Ministry of Health offers the services required for the early detection of breast cancer including mammograms through the maternal health clinics that are distributed in various Syrian governorates.
