Moscow,(ST)-The head of the Spiritual Assembly of Russia’s Muslims, Mufti Albert Karganov, condemned the recent stances and statements made by French President Emmanuel Macron that were offensive to beliefs and religious symbols were under the pretext of freedom of opinion and freedom of the press.
“Macron’s stances and statements that are insulting to Islamic religious beliefs and symbols are a provocation to the entire Islamic world,” Krganov was quoted by Novosti news agency as saying in a statement today.
The Mufti of Chechnya, Salah Hajji Megiyev, described Macron’s actions as an attack on Islam.
Macron had defended the “Charlie Hebdo” newspaper reprinting offensive cartoons of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), claiming that this matter came within the framework of freedom of expression.
