Al-Jaafari: The UN has achieved great accomplishments in confronting humanitarian challenges, but failed in ending occupation and aggression

New York (ST):  Syria’ permanent representative to the UN Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari affirmed that the UN has accomplished many achievements in confronting humanitarian, socio-economic, health and environmental challenges and saved hundreds of thousands of people’s lives, ensured education for millions of children, but it haven’t succeeded in preventing  wars, conflicts and ending occupation and aggression yet.

In a statement he made during the UN ,General Assembly session which was devoted to mark the 75th anniversary for founding the UN, al-Jaafari said, ” When we talk about humanity, its welfare and security, we have to remember the founders of this international organization  after the tragedies of the World War II.”

He added that we are meeting today to make immortal their great achievement represented by founding this organization from which we hoped to give humanity a better world in which all states work within diplomatic pluralism to end colonialism, hegemony, occupation and aggression,  put an end to the dangers of  wars, poverty, illnesses, famine and desertification. “However, if we review the past 75 years, we should be brave enough to admit that we did not reach the level of hopes that we aspired to.”  He said

The Syrian diplomat  went on to say that the UN did not only fail in preventing wars and occupation, but it yielded in many cases to the wishes of some governments that seek only to preserve their hegemony over the world, apart from failing to confront the wishes of the same governments to create hotbeds of tension, chaos, sparking wars and conflicts reaching  the most dangerous phenomenon represented by terrorism and extremism in which these governments have been investing with the aim of spreading chaos.

Al-Jaafari clarified that  nobody can deny that over the past three decades the UN was dominated by certain governments that have political, economic and military influence, noting that these states targeted the sovereignty and independence of several world states until we reached  the current situation in which a super power and its allies occupy lands of other states in parallel to imposing unilateral coercive measures against states with the aim of starving peoples and breaking their wills.

Al-Jaafari concluded by affirming that the UN achievements are many and we are all grateful to the UN founders, but the forthcoming years will be difficult on the path towards a free and safe world in which all people enjoy a healthy and prosperous life, in which all people are respected without resorting to the threat of use  of military force,  or punishing people   economically.
