Al-Moualem to Pederson: The Constitution Discussion Committee is authorized to decide its recommendations and work process

Walid al-Muallem, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, received this morning Geir Pedersen, Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General to Syria, and his accompanying delegation.

The two sides discussed a number of issues related to the situation in Syria. The discussion dealt with  the economic situation and there was agreement that unilateral economic measures make this situation more difficult, especially in light of the spread of the Corona epidemic.

With regard to the work of the Constitution Discussion Committee, the two sides underlined the importance of the success of its work, which requires adherence to the agreed rules of procedures, especially non-interference in its work and not setting any timetables imposed from abroad.

In this context, Minister Al-Moallem affirmed that the committee, since its formation and start of its work, has become the decision maker, as it can decide the  recommendations that it can come out with and its work process- so that all this process is carried out under the leadership and ownership of Syria only and on the basis that the Syrian people have the exclusive right in deciding the future of their country.

On the other hand, Minister Al-Moallem touched on  details related to the Syrian government’s intention to hold an international conference on refugees on the 11th and 12th of November. In this regard, he criticized the Western role in setting conditions and fabricating flimsy arguments to obstruct the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland, which confirms their politicization of this purely humanitarian file and its use as a card in implementing their political agendas.

Dr. Faisal Al-Miqdad, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Dr. Ayman Sousan, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, and Ayman Raad, Director of the Special Office Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates attended the meeting.
