DAMASCUS, (ST)- A shipment of medical aid, presented by the World Health Organization (WHO), arrived in Damascus International airport to enhance the response of the Syrian health institutions to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The aid includes personal protection means for the staff of the health sector, medicines and medical equipment.
In a statement to journalists, Ahmad al-Manzari, the WHO Regional Director for Eastern Mediterranean, said that since the beginning of the Coronavirus crisis, the organization has been working at all levels in cooperation with all countries of the world as well as with supporters to guarantee the preparedness of health systems of these countries to serve their societies. The WHO has also managed to supply the Mediterranean countries with all necessary requirements to deal with this deadly disease, he added.
On his part, Deputy Health Minister Ahmad Khleifawi stressed the importance of the WHO delegation’s visit to Syria, highlighting the current coordination between the Syrian health Ministry and the WHO to adopt all necessary measures to confront the pandemic.
Khleifawi pointed out that the 8.8 tons of aid provided to support the health sector in Syria includes medicines for the Coronavirus, individual means of protection for medical staff and some test materials.
The WHO Representative in Syria, Dr Akjemal Magtymova, on her part, noted the strong cooperation between the WHO and Syria represented in supporting the country’s health sector.
