New York (ST): Syria’s permanent representative to the UN, Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari, stressed that the UN work in Syria should not be limited to the humanitarian dimension, but it should include developmental work too, calling for stopping attempts of politicization, and offering the necessary support for the Syrian government in its efforts to enhance development work and eliminate the challenges imposed by the years of war in Syria.
In a statement he made at the 75th session of the 2nd Financial and Economic Committee of the UN General Assembly, al-Jaafari said that one of the most prominent challenges Syria faces are the unilateral, coercive measures being imposed on the Syrian people, noting that the UN Secretary General and senior UN officials have called to lift these measures because they undermine the capability of the Syrian people to respond to COVID 19 pandemic.
Al-Jaafari referred to the importance of the resolution endorsed by the committee in 1996 about the permanent sovereignty of the Palestinian people on the Occupied Palestinian territories, including the Eastern Jerusalem, and the Arab people in the Occupied Syrian Golan over their natural resources, expressing Syria’s denunciation of the Israeli occupation savage practices, its looting and continued plunder of the natural resources of the Occupied Syrian Golan and the occupied Palestinian lands, which causes environmental harm and endangers them.
Al-Jaafari concluded stressing that the government of the Syrian Arab Republic is looking forward to establishing fair international partnerships based on respecting the international law principles and UN Charter, especially the principle of the national sovereignty in order to support the efforts of the Syrian governmental institutions to overcome all challenges imposed by years of the terrorist war on Syria and the new obstacles resulting from COVID-19 pandemic and achieving the objectives of sustainable development.
