The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, announced today that his country’s forces have seized control of the city of Gabriel and a number of neighboring villages in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
According to Russia Today, Aliyev’s announcement came in a tweet, in which he mentioned the Azerbaijani army’s control of the city of Gabriel and several villages in the region, reiterating that “Karabakh is part of Azerbaijan”.
For its part, the Armenian Ministry of Defense denied what Aliyev said. The Ministry spokeswoman Shushan Stepanyan said on her Facebook page that “the news about Azerbaijan’s control of Gabriel is false.”
The situation in the Nagorno-Karabakh region has witnessed a sudden military escalation since last Sunday.
