A patent granted to two Syrian doctors for producing new cream that safely and effectively treats Leishmaniasis
The Directorate of Commercial and Industrial Property Protection at the Syrian Ministry of Internal Trade and Consumer Protection has granted Dr. Jameela Hseyyan, the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacology of Damascus University, and Dr. Khuloud Nashar, PhD student in the Faculty of Pharmacology, a patent for producing a new cream extracted from aubergine parts that kills Leishmania parasites.
The newly extracted production has been applied to dozens of Leishmaniasis-infected peoples at the Dermatology Hospital of Damascus University and it has proved to have positive results in killing the parasites that cause the disease.
In a statement to SANA, Dr. Hseyyan said that after proving its effectiveness in eliminating Leishmania parasites during the laboratory experiments at the Leishmania Center at the Faculty of Pharmacy in November, 2018, “we obtained an approval to use this production on humans and we managed to apply the cream to 41 infected volunteers from the Dermatology Hospital. The results were excellent and the Leishmania parasites that caused inflammation were killed.”
Dr. Hseyyan said that this plant-based treatment is important as it is effective and safe and is low cost. It ensures an alternative to the medicines that were used for treating leishmaniasis and that have become difficult to secure due to the terrorist war on Syria, the economic blockade and the medicines’ high price.
She pointed out that obtaining a patent facilitates presenting new productions at conferences and helps in finding sponsoring companies to manufacture it. She made it clear that this scientific achievement came as a result of extensive efforts and research carried out with the participation of PhD student Khuloud Nashar.
