740 tons of Sweida apple crop exported to foreign markets this year

SWEIDA, (ST)- Apple is  a main crop in the Syrian province of Sewida. Some 740 tons of Sweida apple production were exported this season mostly to Egypt.  A limited amount went to Sudan.

Chairman of the Sweida Chamber of Agriculture Hatem Abu Ras said in a statement to SANA that the quantity that has been exported so far is acceptable in the light of the decrease in production compared to last season. He pointed out that the process of exporting apple will continue, noting a good marketing movement within the local markets and expecting a gradual increase in exports in the coming period.

Abu Ras indicated that the Chamber will continue to grant certificates of origin to exporters to help them export as many quantities of apple as possible. He pointed out that the number of the granted certificates has reached 35.

He called for enhancing the support being provided by the Export and Production Support and Development Authority to exporters due to the fact that the apple crop faces notable competition in foreign markets.

The current season’s apple production in Sweida is estimated at 25921 tons.
