74 years since the decision on the right of return, millions of Palestinian refugees continue to cling to their right

Occupied Al-Quds, (ST): 74 years have passed since the United Nations General Assembly Resolution No. 194 was issued on this day in 1948. The resolution affirmed the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes from which they were expelled by the Zionist gangs. Despite all these years, the resolution is still far from implementation, but the Palestinian people still adhere to this right which does not fall under the statute of limitations.

The resolution, which remained ink on paper, was one of hundreds of resolutions related to the Palestinian cause, as 754 resolutions were issued by the General Assembly, 97 by the Security Council, and the same by the Human Rights Council, and they did not find their way to implementation, due to the failure of the international community to compel the usurping Israeli entity to implement them, and due to the United States and Western countries’ support and protection for this entity at the Security Council.

In a statement to SANA news reporter, member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization and head of its Refugee Affairs Department Ahmed Abu Holi said: Resolution “194” is a legal document that clearly guarantees the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes, and the refugee issue is the core of the Palestinian cause, pointing out that more than six million refugees are still living in camps and diaspora suffering from the bitterness of displacement and waiting for the implementation of the decision while holding on to their sacred right.

Abu Holi affirmed that all attempts to liquidate the right of return have failed, because this right is stipulated in international resolutions, calling on the free people of the world to support the Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees “UNRWA”, which is facing a financial crisis that serves the Israeli occupation, which is working to make the “UNRWA” absent, because it makes the world  aware of the tragedy of the Palestinians, as part of its attempts to liquidate the refugee issue and their right to return to their homes.

For his part, the coordinator of the Refugee Department in the Palestinian National Forces, Mahmoud Khalaf, indicated that the date of the issuance of Resolution “194” is entrenched in the memory of every Palestinian refugee, as it was issued months after the Nakba and after  the destruction of 529 towns and villages by the Zionist gangs and the displacement of about 950,000 Palestinians, which is more than half of the Palestinian people. The Zionist gangs have committed more than 50 massacres since 1948 to this day, claiming tens of thousands of lives, Khalaf said, stressing that the resolution clearly stipulates the right of the Palestinians refugees to return home.

Khalaf pointed out that the United Nations has not yet been able to implement Resolution No. 194, due the double standard policy of the international community in implementing its resolutions and the West’s continuous support for the Israeli occupation entity that resulted in the continued displacement of more than six million Palestinian refugees who are now in different parts of the world suffering from conditions of oppression and distance. But despite this, the dream of returning does not leave the Palestinian refugees’ imagination, as they are waiting for the implementation of the resolution.

For her part, Maryam Abu Daqqa, member of the Political Bureau of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, affirmed that  the non-implementation of Resolution No. 194 is a continuing crime, and the international community must respect the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes, and must commit itself to implementing UN resolutions, foremost of which is this resolution. She noted that the Palestinian people will continue to fight for the return of every refugee to the land of their forefathers.
