Yesterday, the third South Summit began in the Ugandan capital, Kampala with the participation of Syria and in the presence of the Secretary General of the United Nations and the president of the UN General Assembly.
During the opening of the Summit, the presidency of the G 77 and China was handed over from Cuba to Uganda.
The Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres, stressed in his speech that the countries of the North must bear their responsibilities in supporting the countries of the South, especially in the field of reducing poverty, helping in growth, and for developed countries to fulfill their obligations with regard to climate change, global warming, and compensation.
Guterres pointed to the new challenges facing the countries of the South, including those resulting from climate change and the resulting natural disasters that affect economies and increase the suffering of people, in addition to the energy and food security crises and the challenges associated with the digital divide and the debt crisis.
Guterres stressed the need to reform the global financial system that was created after World War II, which failed to support developing countries and provide them with a safety net. He considered that the Future Summit, which will be held in New York next September, represents a historic opportunity to reform and revive international multilateral action.
Regarding the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, Guterres said: “Israel has caused massive destruction in the Gaza Strip and has killed Palestinians on an unprecedented scale, including people from the United Nations”. He stressed the need to make all possible efforts to prevent the flames of the entire Middle East region.
