The first scientific conference on “Knowledge Economy for Syria after the war. The Role of Syrian Researchers in the Homeland and Expatriates” kicked of yesterday in Dar Al-Assad for Culture and Arts in Damascus. The conference wasorganized by the Higher Commission for Scientific Research in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates and the Network of Syrian Scientists in theexpatriate countries.
The two-day conference, in cooperation with the Planning and International Cooperation Commission, the Arab School for Science and Technology and the Syrian Computer Society, will be attended by 22 expatriate Syrian researchers in 13 countries. It focuses on four main axes: medical, pharmaceutical, engineering, advanced technologies, environment, natural resources, energy, economic and infrastructure development.
Dr. Bassam Ibrahim,the Minister of Higher Education said that the ministry prepared in cooperation with the Higher Commission for Scientific Research a comprehensive national plan to enable scientific research to focus on the developmental side supporting the economy and coordination between scientific research institutions and ministries. It will also help facilitate communication between Syrian researchers inside and outside the country in order to exchange information amongthemselves.
In his turn, the Director General of the Higher Commission for Scientific Research, Dr. Majd Al-Jamali, gave a presentation on the Commission and its projects and objectives, including increasing the budget supporting scientific research and its distribution to scientific research centers.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Ayman Susan pointed out that the Syrian expatriates are considered a national wealth to their homeland through their capabilities and expertise.They provide the country with all possibilities and means to achieve great leaps in the field of scientific research.
Participants also will discuss many issues within the national program for post-war Syria, prepared by the Commission for Planning and International Cooperation and the national policy for science, technology and innovation as drawn up by the Higher Commission for Scientific Research with universities and national research bodies.
The inauguration was attended by Minister of State for Organizations Affairs Dr. Salwa Abdullah, Syrian Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China Dr. Imad Mustafa, a number of university presidents, scientific and research centers and a crowd of researchers and all those interested in this kind of subjects.
