1st Conference on Investment in Renewable Energy will be an opportunity to attract investors: Electricity Minister

The 1st  Conference on Investment in Renewable Energy and Electricity, due to be held in Damascus next week, will provide an opportunity for exchanging experiences, attracting investors and encouraging them to carry out projects in this field and use renewable energy in generating and distributing electricity, according to Minister of Electricity Ghassan Al-Zamel.

In a statement to SANA, Al-Zamel said that the conference, scheduled to be held on May 15 and 16, will discuss the future of electrical energy, investment opportunities in the electricity sector, funding mechanisms and countries’ experiences in the development of the electricity sector.

He pointed out that experts from the ministries of electricity, finance and economy and foreign trade as well as representatives from the Planning and International Cooperation Authority, ESCWA, the Arab Commission for Renewable Energy and Al-Maj Company are to take part in this event.

The minister pointed out that the ministry has prepared a new legislative environment for investment in renewable energy, noting the establishment of a fund for supporting renewable energy projects, enhancing the efficiency of energy and amending some old laws with the aim of improving the current situation of electricity in the country. He also clarified that Syria has certain elements that encourage the implementation of renewable energy projects given the sunny weather.

According to Al-Zamel, the conference will create an opportunity for investors to propose their ideas and discuss them with concerned ministries in order to eliminate any obstacles that may face the development of the electricity sector.

He pointed out that investors from Arab and friendly countries were invited to take part in the conference.
