The 1st Baghdad International Water Conference kicked off on Saturday in the Iraqi capital with the participation of a Syrian delegation led by Minister of Water Resources Tammam Ra’d.
In his opening speech, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi called for joining efforts to turn challenges into opportunities that contribute to the protection and sustainability of water to preserve the rights of future generations to this wealth.
He urged achieving justice and equality in distributing water.
Minister Ra’d told SANA correspondent in Baghdad that the visit of the Syrian delegation to Baghdad is important and that his participation in the conference at the invitation of his Iraqi counterpart Mahdi Rashid Al-Hamdani will hopefully be a step towards enhancing cooperation as well as friendship and fraternity between the two countries.
Ra’d pointed out that he and his Iraqi counterpart will discuss the file of the Euphrates and the Tigris rivers and related common problems, hoping that they will reach positive results in this regard.
The first day of the conference discussed several topics including the strategic planning and integrated management of water resources, water and food security, climate changes, regional and international cooperation to put an end to water shortage and the impacts of terrorist activities on water system.
