18th General Assembly of OANA kicks off in Tehran

Tehran, (ST) – The work of the General Assembly of the eighteenth session of the Organization of Asia and Pacific News Agencies (OANA), which is hosted by the Islamic Republic of Iran News Agency (IRNA), kicked off this morning in Tehran.

Syrian Arab News Agency, SANA represented by its Director General, Iyad Wannous, and 60 chiefs and editors-in-chief of 35 agencies news from OANA members participated in the session.

During the opening, the organization’s rotating presidency was transferred from the South Korean Yonhap News Agency to the Iranian News Agency (IRNA).

The themes of the meeting deal with shedding light on the Corona pandemic, the role of the media in dealing with it, prevention and treatment, and means of enhancing media cooperation after the pandemic.

During the opening, Dr. Muhammad Mahdi Esmaili, Minister of Culture and Guidance of Iran stressed the importance of strengthening media cooperation between news agencies and communicating accurate information.

Esmaili also emphasized on working to promote peace and friendship in the face of common media challenges represented by disinformation, media terrorism and information monopoly.

The opening session was attended by a number of representatives of diplomatic missions in Tehran, including representatives of the Syrian embassy.
