1656 candidates, including 200 women, compete for 250 seats at the People’s Assembly

The Syrians head today to the polling centers to exercise their constitutional right and duty in the third legislative term of the People’s Assembly elections, emphasizing through their participation the independence of their national decision and the victory of their will over the plots contrived against Syria.

The Syrians participate in the elections to elect 250 members- representing them in the People’s Assembly- from1656 candidates, including 200 women candidates. The Supreme Judicial Committee announced the allocation of 7277 centers to receive citizens in all governorates to complete the electoral process.

A member of the Supreme Judicial Committee for Elections, Judge Heba Saif Al-Din Fatoom, confirmed in a statement to SANA that the judicial sub-committees in the governorates that work under the supervision of the Supreme Judicial Committee for Elections are responsible for overseeing the progress of the electoral process in the electoral centers.

According to the General Elections Law No. 5 of 2014, the election begins at seven in the morning of the day specified for the election and will be closed at seven in the evening. The Supreme Elections Committee can decide the extension of the election period for a period of five hours in some polling centers or more.

The People’s Assembly assumes the legislative power in the country under the constitution by issuing legislative decrees, approving the general budget, declaring war and peace, and ratifying foreign treaties. It also exercises control authority over the government by holding ministers accountable and withholding confidence from one or the entire government.
