12th Round of Astana Talks on Syria Kicks off in Kazakh Capital

NUR-SULTAN, (ST)- Syrian Arab Republic Delegation to Astana  meeting on Syria held talks with the Iranian delegation led by Assistant Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Ali Asghar Khanji within the framework of the 12th Round of Astana talks, being held in the Khazakh Capital Nur-Sultan, to find a solution to the crisis in Syria.

The Syrian Republic’s delegation to the talks, which kicked off Thursday morning, is led by Dr. Bashar Al-Jaafari, Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

The Russian delegation led by Alexander Lavrentiev, the Russian president’s Special Envoy for Syria,  also held a meeting with the Iranian delegation.

 Lavrentiev said that “the years old joint action will continue between the Russian and Iranian delegations as to coordinate our stances,” stressing the Russian delegation’s great interest in its meeting with the Syrian side to be held before the tripartite meeting of the delegations of the three guarantor states of Astana meeting.

On his part, Khanji said he is confident that Astana process will be a success, noting the enhancement of cooperation between the Iranian and Russian sides to achieve this success.

“The common goal is to guarantee security, peace and stability in Syria,” Khanji affirmed.

Taking part in the 12th Astana meeting on Syrian settlement are the three guarantors of Astana process (Russia, Iran and Turkey) and a delegation from the United Nations led by Geir Pedersen, the UN Chief’s Special envoy for Syria, as an observer.
