The Pakistani authorities announced today that at least 12 people have died as a result of the floods caused by heavy monsoon rain during the past 24 hours.
The Chinese news agency Xinhua quoted the National Disaster Management Authority as saying that “six people were killed in the southern province of Sindh, which was the most affected by the floods, while three people were killed in the southwestern province of Balochistan and the same in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.” At least seven children were among the dead.
The authorities indicated that the floods caused the destruction of 19,153 houses and the death of 2,042 heads of livestock in separate areas of Pakistan.
The World Health Organization announced last Monday that the number of victims of the floods in Pakistan, which have continued since mid-June, amounted to about 1,290 dead and 12,500 injured.
