Dr. Bashar Hafez Al-Assad Declares Himself Presidential Candidate

DAMASCUS, (ST)- Dr.  Bashar Hafez Al-Assad on Monday submitted to the Supreme Constitutional Court (SCC) an application of candidacy for the post of President of the Syrian Arab Republic.

Speaker of the People's Assembly (PA) Mohammad Jihad al-Lahham announced that the PA received from the SCC a notification announcing that Dr. Bashar Hafez Al-Assad had submitted his candidacy application attached with required documents.

 Al-Assad's bid raises the number of Presidential candidates to seven.

Dr.  Bashar Hafez Al-Assad is now president of the Syrian Arab Republic and here is his CV:

Born in Damascus, September 11, 1965.

Finished his high secondary school at Al-Hurriah Institute in Damascus in 1982.

PA Notified of four New Presidential Candidacy Applications

DAMASCUS, (ST)-Speaker of the People's Assembly (PA) Mohammad Jihad al-Lahham announced on Sunday that the PA had received four new notifications from the Supreme Constitutional Court SCC saying that Mrs. Sawsan Omar Haddad, Mr. Sameer Ahmad Mu'alla, Mr. Mohammad Firas Yaseen Rajouh and Mr. Abdul Salam Yousef had submitted applications of candidacy for the post of the President of the Syrian Arab Republic.

Presidency welcomes democratic candidacy process

DAMASCUS, (ST)_ Presidency of the Syrian Arab Republic has welcomed the democratic and free atmosphere in the stage of candidacy for the office of president of the republic.

In a statement released today, the presidency said:" Submission of several candidates' applications to the Supreme Constitutional Court is a democratic and positive atmosphere and it is an implementation of the constitution and laws."

It called on all Syrian citizens to positively deal with the process that offers many options for them when they vote.

List of Approved Presidential Candidates to be Published Five Days after Closing Date, SCC Spokesman Says

DAMASCUS,(ST)_The Supreme Constitutional Court has received no application for registration as a presidential candidate on Friday, the court's Spokesman said.

Lawyer Majed Khadra told reporters: "Any citizen who sees that he is qualified to lead Syria and satisfies the conditions of candidacy has the right to run for presidency."

He confirmed that the court will never interfere in the election campaigns of any candidate.
