Three Presidential Candidates to Begin Election Campaigns on May 11th

DAMASCUS,(ST)_The Supreme Constitutional Court has announced the final list of presidential candidates to formally begin their campaigns as of May,11th, 2014.

Speaking at a news conference held today, the court's Spokesman said that the final list of presidential candidates comprises of Mr. Maher Abdulhafiz Hajjar, Mr. Hassan Abdullah al-Nouri and Dr. Bashar al-Assad.

Syria gears up for presidential elections amid successive victories being notched up by army units against foreign-backed terrorist groups on several fronts and the US-led bids to hamper and play down the decision of the majority of the Syrian people to elect their leader under national sovereignty.

The Syriatimes e-newspaper conducted an interview with political analyst Dr. Bassam Abu Abdallah, Director of Damascus Center for Strategic Studies, to shed light on the repercussions of holding the presidential elections on time and Syria's international and regional relations after the elections.

SCC Studies Six Grievance Requests

DAMASCUS,(ST)_The final list of Presidential candidates is to be announced on May the10th 2014, Spokesman of the Supreme Constitutional Court says.

Lawyer Majed Khadra was quoted today on the official news agency (SANA) as saying that the final list of presidential candidates will be announced on Saturday after the court completes studying six grievance petitions according to the constitution and the general election law.  

The grievance petitions were submitted by: Mr. Ahmad Ali Qase'a, Ali Hasan al-Hasan, Bashir Mohammad al-Balah, Khaled Abdu al-Kredi, Sameh Bin Mekha'el Mousa, and Sameer Ahmad M'alla having their applications rejected by the court to the presidential candidates.

Syrian Embassies Invite Syrians Abroad to Register to vote in Presidential Elections

DAMASCUS, (ST)-In preparation for the Syrian presidential elections and in order to help the Syrians abroad vote for their candidate,  the Syrian embassies worldwide have invited Syrian citizens with valid resident cards in the hosting countries to visit their embassies and register their names in the voters lists carrying with them their passports.

Elections will be held on May 28, 2014 for the Syrians abroad.

The Presidential Elections Committee at the Foreign and Expatriates Ministry said yesterday that names and related identity data of electors could be registered in the election list through the embassy's fax, e-mail or ordinary Post.

Al-Lahham Urges Election Experts in Friendly Countries to Follow up Syrian Presidential Elections

DAMASCUS, (ST)-Speaker of the People's Assembly Mohammad Jihad al-Lahham on Monday sent letters of invitation to parliament speakers, MPs and national assemblies of a number of friendly countries urging them to send their election experts in order to follow up the upcoming Syrian presidential elections scheduled to be held on June 3rd, 2014.

The invitation letters read: "It is my pleasure to tell you that the presidential elections in the Syrian Arab Republic have been decided to be held on June 3rd, 2014 based on the Syrian Constitution and relevant laws and in a real and democratic presidential race to which 24 candidates belonging to different parties and representing all the categories and components of the Syrian society had applied. It is also my pleasure to call on you to send a group of your respectable MPs and election experts to Syria to follow up the presidential elections in our country, starting from our trust in your objective and supportive stances towards the Syrian people and their right to choose their presidential candidate and political future with complete honesty, freedom and transparency and away from foreign interference."

Al-Lahham's letters added that "it is the first time Syria witnesses a contest between several candidates for the post of the president. It is our pleasure to share us seeing how the Syrian people are going to choose their president with complete democracy, particularly under the ongoing systematic political and media war being waged by western and Arab countries and media institutions against the Syrian state and people."

The letters were sent to the parliaments of the friendly countries of Russia, China, India, South Africa, Brazil, Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Ecuador and Armenia.

Al-Lahham thanked Syria's friendly countries' parliaments and people for their support to the country's unity and sovereignty and for their rejection of the foreign-backed international takfiri terrorism which has been targeting Syria over the past three years.
