Former Turkish Chief of Staff: Preserving Syria's unity and sovereignty necessary for Turkey's security and stability

ANKARA, (ST)- Turkey's former Chief of General Staff İlker Başbuğ has stressed that preserving Syria's unity and sovereignty is necessary for the security and stability of Turkey.

In a statement to the Turkish Sözcü newspaper, Başbuğ called for complete normalization of ties with the Syrian state and its legitimate government, according to the Syrian News Agency (SANA).

This is the only way to deal with the crisis in Syria and with its repercussions on Turkey, he said, reiterating that Turkey should distance itself from interfering in other countries ' affairs, particularly its neighbors.

Since the beginning of the crisis in Syria, the Turkish regime, led by Recep Tayyib Erdogan, has facilitated the infiltration of tens of thousands of terrorists into the Syrian territories. It has turned Turkey into a safe haven for terrorists and cooperated with the terrorist organizations, mainly Daesh, in stealing and smuggling Syrian oil and antiquities.
