European members of the Security Council strongly criticize the US declaration on Israeli settlements

New York, ST- European members of the UN Security Council have strongly criticized the US administration's stance on Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Britain, France, Germany, Belgium and Poland, in a joint statement read by German Deputy UN Ambassador Jurgen Schultz, called on the Israeli occupation entity to halt settlement activities, stressing that  it was "illegal under international law."

The statement pointed out that the Israeli settlement operations undermine any possibility of reaching a settlement to the Palestinian issue, expressing the concern of the five countries about "Israeli calls for annexation of areas in the West Bank."

Nikolai Mladenov, the UN special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, expressed his regret over the US announcement and reaffirmed the UN stance that the Israeli settlements are illegal and constitute a flagrant violation of international law under the UN Security Council resolution of December 2016.
