Palestinian and international rejection of US announcement on Israeli settlements

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced on Monday that his administration does not consider that the Israeli settlements contradict the international law, ignoring all international resolutions, especially the UN Security Council resolution No. 2334 of 2016, which demands that the occupation immediately halt all settlement activity in the occupied Palestinian territories. This announcement represents a new American bias towards the Israeli occupation.

Palestinian presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina said that this announcement is invalid and unacceptable and totally contradictory to international law and resolutions of international legitimacy rejecting the settlement plans of occupation and the Security Council resolutions, stressing that Washington shoulders full responsibility for any repercussions of this dangerous position.

Abu Rudeineh calls on the world countries to reject and condemn these statements and the previous resolutions on Jerusalem because they are illegal and threaten international peace and security, pointing out that the US administration is not authorized to cancel the resolutions of international legitimacy.

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh stressed that the US administration's announcement is a mockery of international law and resolutions that clearly criminalize settlement, calling on the international community to confront this dangerous announcement, which constitutes a blow to the possibility of reaching a settlement to the Palestinian people cause and establishing an independent and sovereign state on the borders of 4th June 1967 with Jerusalem as its capital.

Saeb Erekat, Secretary General of the PLO's Executive Committee, expressed his strong disapproval of this announcement, pointing out that the United States’ position constitutes a direct challenge to the international law and will.

Erekat called on the international community to confront this illegal announcement and hold the US administration accountable for these flagrant and persistent violations of international law, which would lead to the destabilization of relations among the nations of the world.

In turn, Members of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization stressed that the US announcement shows that the US administration is a threat to the international peace and security and a partner in the crimes of the Israeli occupation as well as providingpolitical cover for its escalating violations.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, the General Command, condemned the American position towards the Zionist settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories, considering it as a link in the context of the so-called “deal of the century” to eliminate the Palestinian issue.

In a statement, which SANA received a copy of today ,the Front said that the policy of normalization and negotiations encouraged the Trump administration to continue its decisions against the Palestinian people, stressing that the actual confrontation of these and other dangers requires a return to the concept and mechanisms of resistance, rebuilding the PLO and moving on the track that expresses the identity and will of the people. .

In a similar statement, the Palestinian Popular Struggle Front condemned the American position, confirming that it is an American aggression on Palestinian lands and rights and a flagrant challenge of the international legitimacyresolutions.

Fateh Movement pointed out that steadfastness of the Palestinian people and their adherence to the resistance and national rights will fail all conspiracies aimed at eliminating their cause.

The Permanent Representative of Palestine to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, said that he started consultations with members of the UN Security Council to mobilize international positions to confront the illegal US announcement on settlements, noting that the Council will hold a meeting tomorrow on the Palestinian issue and will focus on the American position that is incompatible withinternational legitimacy and law.

Internationally, Russia reaffirmed its principled position of the illegality of Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Moscow's position on the settlement issue has not changed, the media office of the Russian Foreign Ministry said, calling for the need to settle the Palestinian issue through negotiations.

In Brussels, EU Commissioner for Foreign Policy and Security Federica Mogherini said in a statement that the EU's position on Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories has not changed, stressing that all operations in this area are illegal.

The EU calls on Israel to end all settlement activity, Mogherini said, noting that the US announcement undermines prospects for a settlement of the Palestinian cause.
