Activities of the IPU's General Assembly kicked off with Syria’s participation

With the participation of Syria, the activities of the 141st  session of the General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the accompanying meetings began on Monday  in the capital of Serbia, Belgrade.

More than 1,700 parliamentarians from different countries of the world took part in the meetings of the Assembly and  discussed  ways of enhancing international law,  roles and mechanisms of parliament , the contribution of regional cooperation in addition to the latest developments to promote gender equality and youth empowerment, defend the human rights of parliamentarians and achieve comprehensive health coverage.

 The Syrian delegation includes Deputy Speaker of the People's Assembly Najdah Anzour, Secretary of the People's Assembly Khalid Al-Aboud, Chairman of the Committee for Arab and Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Boutros Morjana,, and the MPs  Samir Al-Khatib, Inas Al-Mallouhi, Saleh Marouf, Anas Zrei, Noor Durra and Khalid Al-Daher.

During the meeting on the “legal, social and physical barriers that prevent comprehensive health coverage for women and girls,” Member of  the People's Assembly Inas Mallouhi reviewed the available health services and the  health centers and hospitals spread throughout Syria. The MP  pointed out that health coverage includes offering free of charge services to women and girls, starting from the childhood and maternity care centers to the private hospitals for obstetrics and gynecology to tetanus-related vaccines as well as permanent campaigns for disease awareness, prevention and treatment.

She highlighted  Syria's extensive campaign for the prevention and early detection of breast cancer, stressing that there are no legal or social barriers preventing women and girls from getting full health care.

Al-Mallouhi referred to the huge damage caused to the health facilities by terrorist organizations in Syria, where 700 doctors were killed and kidnapped and 450 ambulances and 388 hospitals were completely destroyed.

The delegation participated in the meetings of the Asian Group and in the coordination meeting of the Islamic Group and the Arab Group, during  which filling the vacancies of the Arab Group in the Permanent Committees of the Inter-Parliamentary Union was agreed.
