Syria Urges Immediate Withdrawal of Invading Turkish Forces from the Syrian Territories They Occupied

DAMASCUS, (ST)- Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates has stressed that the Turkish occupation of the Syrian city of Afrin is illegal and it violates the International Law and the principles of the UN Charter, urging immediate withdrawal of the Turkish invading troops from the Syrian lands they occupied.

In two letters to the UN Chief and President of the Security Council on Monday, the ministry said "on March 18, 2018, President of the Turkish regime announced that his forces controlled and occupied the Syrian city of Afrin following a two-month aggression that killed and wounded thousands of civilians in Afrin and the surrounding villages and that displaced thousands of Syrians who are currently suffering deteriorating humanitarian situation."

The Turkish army committed crimes against humanity and war crimes in Afrin, including ethnic cleansing, stealing citizens' properties and destroying their houses and detaining many people within inhuman detention conditions , the ministry added.

It went on to say that the Syrian Arab Republic condemns the Turkish occupation of Afrin and the crimes committed by the invading forces. Syria also calls on the Security Council to assume its responsibilities, put an end to the Turkish attacks, pressure the Turkish forces to immediately withdraw from the Syrian territories and provide urgent humanitarian aid to the Syrian citizens who were victims of the Turkish aggressive policies.

The ministry concluded by saying that the Turkish continuous aggressive acts against Syria don't only threaten civilians' lives and the unity of the Syrian people and lands, but they prolong the war on Syria to serve terrorism and its supporters and they also threaten peace and security of the region and the world.
